Robert Maynard Hutchins, while being the president and chancellor of the Chicago University between 1930 and 1950, advocated an education paradigm known as “The Great Books”. “The Great Books” is a collection of the most influential works that had shaped the West. The booklist presented here is an abridged version founded on Hutchins’ concept.

中國之文獻，蓋可攝於經、史、子、集之四部，其量浩大，無以甚讀。清末學者梁啟超，擇四部之要作，以為任何中國學人之必讀，梁啟超言其所薦曰：「以上各書，無論學礦、學工程學……皆須一讀。若並此未讀，真不能認為中國學人矣。」本書單略廣於梁啟超之薦也。
